ZEROصفر
Exploring the role of calculation and computation in the context of climate change

ZEROصفر is a 24-hr online broadcast exploring what might, should, and could get counted in order to address climate change as a planetary phenomenon. Through conversation, sound, and music, ZEROصفر explores the role of calculation and computation in developing a plan for surviving the contemporary climate crisis.

ZEROصفر focuses on the next generations of the future in the conversation at COP27, which is typically dominated by adult leaders. Student leaders will address decarbonisation and urban resilience approaches by universities, communities, governments and businesses, across architecture and urban landscapes.

The project launched a new channel at Ain Shams University Cairo, sharing the tools of dialogue, listening, and radio technologies with local students and youth. The project was funded by The British Council as part of its Egypt-UK Climate Change grants programme.

In this segment we travelled to Mashiyat Nasser district in Cairo to speak with Theresa, founder of “Mesaha”, a youth charity that works with some 200 children locally on building their voice, confidence and artistic expression. Theresa takes us around her husband’s plastic recycling machinery and shows us how plastics taken from the streets of Cairo are cleaned, processed, delivered and turned into the plastic pellets that head back to factories.
